Sardines are small, oily fish that can be used to feed cats an occasional treat.

Sardines are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, vitamin D, and taurine, which benefit your cat’s health.

Sardines can help reduce inflammation, support joint and bone health, nourish the skin and coat, and provide essential amino acids your cat needs.

However, sardines should not be your cat’s primary or sole source of protein, as they are not a complete and balanced diet.

Sardines should make up less than 10% of your cat’s overall diet, and should be fed no more than once or twice a week.

Sardines should also be plain, cooked, and de-boned before feeding to your cat.

Avoid:

  • Sardines that are canned in oil, brine, or with added seasonings, as these can cause digestive upset, weight gain, or toxicity in your cat.
  • Raw sardines contain parasites or bacteria that can cause food poisoning or infections in your cat.

If you want to feed your cat sardines, you can also look for commercial cat foods containing sardines.

These cat foods are fortified with other nutrients that your cat needs and they are certified by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) as complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage.
